A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING JAVERRO JANUARY OF CALLAWAY HIGH SCHOOL FOR HIS OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND FOR BEING SELECTED TO COMPETE IN THE 11TH ANNUAL DOWN UNDER BOWL IN AUSTRALIA.
WHEREAS, Javerro January, a multi-sport senior at Jackson's Callaway High School, has been selected to the All-Star football team to compete in the 11th annual 1999 Down Under Bowl, to be held in June on the Gold Coast of Australia; and
WHEREAS, January has done just about everything in high school he set out to do years ago, both academically and athletically; and
WHEREAS, January began displaying his athletic prowess at age 10 while at Powell Middle School, playing soccer shortly after excelling in baseball and football; and between ages 14-16, January helped his AAU basketball teams win three consecutive state championships and advance to compete nationally; and
WHEREAS, once in high school, January made his presence felt as a standout in football, baseball and soccer; a 6-foot-1, 180-pound quarterback on the Chargers' football team, he passed for more than 2,000 yards and 13 touchdowns and had 9 rushing scores as a junior; he set a Jackson Public Schools passing yardage record in 1997 by completing 19 of 27 passes for 327 yards against Gentry; he also accounted for 5 touchdowns - 2 passing and 3 rushing; after being selected to the Prep Star magazine 1998 preseason All-Region team, January wrapped up his prep football career by completing 96 of 182 passes for 1,256 yards and 7 touchdowns; and in baseball last spring, January had a home run, 18 runs, 27 hits, 23 RBIs, 19 singles, 4 doubles and 3 triples, and had a .338 batting average; and
WHEREAS, January's 3.7 grade point average helped him become first runner-up to Mr. Callaway; he scored 20 on the American College Test; in addition, January is a member of the National Honor Society, Who's Who Among American High School Students and is on the Callaway High honor roll; he plans to enroll in a physical therapy program in college; and has signed to Louisiana Tech to play football; and
WHEREAS, January is an usher and junior superintendent at College Hill Baptist Church in Jackson and his hobbies include playing video games, reading and talking on the telephone; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize one of Mississippi's best and brightest student/athletes, whose personal motto is "A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins":
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Javerro January of Callaway High School, Jackson, Mississippi, for his outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments and for being selected to compete in the 11th Annual Down Under Bowl to be held on the Gold Coast of Australia in June.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be forwarded to Javerro January, his mother Mrs. Phyllis G. Brooks, his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Garner Crouther, the Principal of Callaway High School, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
